Care work is an essential foundation of society, mainly performed by women, is screamingly underpaid and often not even perceived as work. “My Work Is Your Foundation“ reverses the power dynamic: What would happen if unpaid care workers suddenly just put down their ”guns“? If they refused to work, demanded fair pay and went on strike? This project aims to raise awareness of how fragile the foundation on which our society is built is — namely on the shoulders of care workers, mostly still women. This gender-care gap not only leads to double burdens, but is also partly responsible for one of further injustices such as poorer security, poverty traps and financial dependency. However, being the invisible foundation of society means not only burden, but also power. A political power to act that needs to be made effective in the collective demand for a fair division of labour, adequate pay and better protection.
“My Work Is Your Foundation“ is a multi-part participatory art project. It consists of an analogue self-portrait series “Weapons of a Housewife“ and, in a participatory moment, people in public space around the globe are asked to give insights in their own experiences with unpaid care work.
